These images were obtained at the EL Cid Castilla Beach Hotel, Mazatlan, Mexico, April 8, 2024.  At that location, the total eclipse lasted 4 minutes and 10 seconds.  During that brief interval, the Moon completely covered the bright disk of the Sun.  However, some other faint features of the Sun became visible.  The Sun's thin outer atmosphere, the corona, is visible as a faint white glow surrounding the black silhouette of the Moon.  Several prominences are also visible as red or pink spots.  These are very hot clouds of denser hydrogen gas evaporating from the Sun's surface.  Some of these are larger than the Earth, and may last for several days.  The total eclipse ended when the movement of the Moon began to uncover the very bright white disk of the Sun (bottom picture).  This momentary sight of a dazzling bright spot of sunlight blended with a last glimpse of the corona is often called the "diamond ring".  The images of totality were taken with a Sigma 600 mm f/8 catadioptric lens attached to a Sony Alpha 6000 DSLR.  The camera assembly was mounted on a battery-powered tangent arm sun tracker.
